Technology has become a staple factor in our everyday lives. Pretty much everything we do includes some sort of technology no matter what or where it is. From using the GPS on the highway to washing and turning the shower water off, everything is technology. Technology has evolved with us as discoveries are made and new inventions are formed. However, it has seen a tremendous evolution in the past couple of decades. While I could go on and on about the importance of technology by talking about important inventions like satellites, etc, I want to focus on three main benefits that it adds to our everyday lives: the reduced distance barrier, the increase in life expectancy, and the overall comfort it brings to our lifestyles
My first point is that while it may be a bit emotional, distance is no longer a major obstacle in our world today. Whether it be relationships, friendships, or families, everyone is a quick phone call away. Old friendships don’t have to die off because there is no way to communicate. Just because we can not physically be in the presence of our loved ones at times, doesn’t mean that we cannot speak to them or even see them through a video call. There was a time when the world would wait weeks for their letters and packages to reach their significant others, family, friends, coworkers, etc. And even after sending the parcel, they would have no way of knowing that it had reached until the person receiving the package would send a letter back to the sender in the first place, and this vicious cycle would never end. However, that is not the case anymore. An example of this is that in Spain, during COVID-19, the country was heavily locked down. Due to this, a study showed that 8 out of every 10 citizens starting from age 18 all the way to 65 relied on video calls to stay in touch with their loved ones. This is more than half the population. This was the case all around the world, and honestly, it still is. We rely on technology to keep us connected to our roots and our homes, and thanks to it, we can not only just call or text each other whenever we want, but we can also book each other plane tickets or other methods of transportation to get to each other faster. The limits of technology are endless which has changed the world around us as we know it.
In addition to the reduced distance barrier, technology has also caused an increase in life expectancy. Thanks to the increase in technology being applied in the healthcare and medicine world, studies have shown an increase in the quality of life of many in terms of health.
